The Department of Biological Science and Engineering was established in 1995 and recruited graduate students in the same year. In 1998, it began to enroll undergraduate students. Currently, two undergraduate majors in biotechnology and chemical biology experiments (H) have been established. It was awarded the title of “Famous Brand Professional” in Shaanxi Province in 2003 and was approved as a doctoral program in the first-level discipline of biology in 2011. There are 32 faculty members, including 16 professors and 7 associate professors; 22 master's tutors and 11 doctoral supervisors. Subjects include biochemistry and molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, neurobiology, microbiology, physiology, bioscience, cancer and immunity.
The Department of Biological Science and Engineering supports the first 1% of ESI in biology and biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, neuroscience and behavioral science. It supports the life science research of Xi'an Jiaotong University ranked among the "Nature Index of the National Top 50 in the field of life sciences"; biology major QS ranked 15th in the country. The academic leader is Elsevier China high-cited scientist for five consecutive years. In the past five years, our department has undertaken 2 national 973 projects, 1 youth 973 project, more than 30 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, and research funding of more than 30 million RMB.
Our major aims to cultivate excellent compound talent who possessing sound personality, humanistic feelings, global vision, social responsibility and solid scientific foundation. Our graduate students will have comprehensive scientific literacy, realistic and innovative spirit, a solid base of life science knowledge and biotechnology development, application, transformation capabilities, and play a leading role in the life sciences, medical research and biotechnology industries.
The major is based on the “Key Laboratory of Biomedical Information Engineering Ministry of Education”, “Shaanxi Provincial Nutrition and Health Engineering Research Center”, “Shaanxi Undergraduate Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center”, and the provincial “Bioengineering Professional Penetration Experimental Zone” in Shaanxi Province, "Xi'an Jiaotong University - Nestlé Joint Laboratory of Nutrition and Health" and other teaching and research platforms to carry out talent training.
