Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Application (IBIA) is formerly known as the Biomedical Electronic Engineering Research Group established in 1979. IBIA mainly works in ultrasound imaging and multimodal imaging, therapeutic ultrasound, precision diagnosis and treatment technologies, and equipment research and development. IBIA always is one of the main supporting institutes of the Biomedical Engineering Program of Xi’an Jiaotong University and the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education of China, as well as one of the institutes that train the most science and technology postgraduate students in the field of biomedical ultrasound in Asia.

IBIA is led by professor Wan Mingxi, the winner of the National Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, has 8 professors, 5 associate professors, 4 assistant professors, and 1 engineer. IBIA established the systematical training and curriculum systems for medical ultrasound and high-end imaging talents, as well as a Sino-French dual Ph.D. training program. More than 370 postgraduate students and more than 120 Ph.D. students have been successively trained. Most of them are employed by top universities, research institutions, and companies in the world and play the key and leading roles in their positions.

IBIA has a leading research platform of medical ultrasound and high-end imaging, including 9 professional laboratories and 3 joint laboratories with famous companies. A number of scientific research achievements and key technologies have been industrialized by well-known companies and the corresponding equipment has entered into the global market. It has won one State Science and Technology Progress Award, two State Technology Invention Awards, one WIPO-China Award for Chinese Outstanding Patented Invention, Top Ten Medical Advances in China, and more than ten provincial and ministerial science and technology awards. For the first time, a mainland scholar was the general chair to host the IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium in 2021.

IBIA covers the following research topics: biomedical ultrasound imaging, therapeutic ultrasound, treatment monitoring, and precise diagnosis, biological micro-nano systems and controlled drug release, multimodal cavitation physics and cavitation biology, molecular probes, molecular recognition and molecular imaging, speech, auditory and neuromuscular system, multimodal imaging and brain intelligence, ultrasound neuromodulation, intelligent computing imaging, biomedical information acquisition, processing and instrumentation.
