Institute of Mitochondrial Biology and Medicine, Xi’an Jiaotong University (IMBM), established in January 2009, belongs to the School of Life Science and Technology and the Institutes of Bio-Medical and Health Engineering,. IMBM, as China's first research institute is working on the basic and applied studies of mitochondrial biology and medicine. In 2011, IMBM jointly established the Nutrition and Health Laboratory with Nestle Research Center. In 2012, IMBM established the Translational Research Center for Nutrition and Health of Shaanxi Province with the sponsor of Shaanxi Provincial Reform and Development Commission. On November 16, 2015, the Douglas C. Wallace-Institute for Mitochondrial and Epigenomic Information Sciences (DCW-IMEIS) was inaugurated by IMBM. In 2016, the establishment of International Joint Laboratory was approved by Xi’an Jiaotong University; In September 2017, IMBM established Joint Institute of Biomedicine of Xi 'an Jiaotong University-Shanxi 38 Fule Science and Technology Group; In April 2019, IMBM established the Joint Institute of Cellular Nutrition and Life Science of Xi 'an Jiaotong University-Xiaotianshi (Xi’an) Ltd. Group; In September 2019, IMBM established the Xi 'an Jiaotong University-Zhongqin Huirong Joint Institute of Regenerative Medicine. More recently in 2020, IMBM established the Innovation Base of Mitochondrial Bio-Medicine of Shaanxi Province with the sponsor of Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Bureau.

IMBM has the international first-class platform of mitochondrial research, and is active in the fields of international mitochondrial and free radical biomedicine. The research team currently has 10 professors, 9 associate professors, 10 assistant professors, 1 technician, 56 PhD students, and 42 master students. The research interests mainly focus on the mechanisms of free radical and mitochondrial metabolisms in aging, metabolic disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, exercise and microgravity. In resent years, IMBM has independently or jointly hosted the International Mitochondrial Biomedical Seminar and 2011 China Mitochondrial Conference (2011); the 9th Asian and the 5th China Mitochondrial International Conference (2012); the 5th International Conference on Nutrition and Physical Activity on Aging, Obesity and Cancer (2014); the International Symposium of DCW-IMEIS (2015); the International Symposium on Neurodegenerative Diseases and the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Brain Science (2016); the International Workshop of the European Organization for Molecular Biology (EMBO Workshop): Mitochondrial Quality Control (2017); the 8th Asian and 14th International Free Radical Conference on Mitochondrial Biomechanics (2017), the 6thInternational Symposium on Hydrogen and Hydrogen Medicine(2019) and the 7thAcademic Conference on Aging and Anti-Aging(2019) etc. IMBM has a certain international influence in developing mitochondria-targeting nutrients and drugs to prevent and treat age-related diseases as its unique characteristic.
